Ga waripum bitjuwayiŋ bayiŋ gunyambin guwatharamiyarran ḏur’ḏuryunmiyarran yolthu bayiŋ ŋätjil ŋawattthuwarra banhaya ḏupthunda warraw’ wuŋuḻiwuŋ.Ga bitjanan bili gayŋiyan nyenan bayawaḻiyan bitjuwayiŋ ŋarran dhawar’thawaryuwanan banhaya rom malanynha nhä gayŋiyan dhanal banhalaŋaya dhulmuŋa ŋarirri’yu malaŋuyu ŋayathan ŋätjil.
Bitjuwayiŋ yaka ḏuŋḏuŋ ga yaka räy-nhänhamiyarra ŋunhuŋ-nhäwu malawu. Bitjuwayiŋ gayŋan galŋa-ŋuwatjin ga bärrkuwaḻ dhanal djäma.
Ŋangawul dhanal bayiŋ warkthuwarra ŋayaŋay’ ga ŋunhuŋ nhä banha nhan ŋarran meṉgu’miṉguwan dhanal dhanaliŋguway rom malanynha nhalpiyan, dhanal gayŋan ŋätjil nyenan. Warraw’ wuŋuḻinharra dhanaliŋgu rom malanynha banha.

Ga banhayan nhä malanynha ŋarran winya’winyayuwanan bitjanan ḻiŋgun, bitjanan ḻiŋgun. Mä-waŋgany waripum.
Bitjuwayiŋ bayiŋ nyenarran ranganharaŋuru nhäŋuru malaŋuŋuru banha bitjan gayŋiyan ŋätjil dhanal nyinan warraw’ wuŋuḻinharraŋa nyenan. Waripum rom bitjuwayiŋ nhän ŋarru bilaŋ gulinybuman warraw’ wuŋuḻiwu rom ga guŋnharryumana. Gatjuy! Nhuŋgun dhuwanma warraw’ wuŋuḻi djakawarruwa nhuŋguway rom barrakinynha ḏuŋḏuŋguwanan nyäkun malanynha. Bitjana ŋarru banhaya. Bilaŋgarri bitjayarra ŋarirri malanynha banhal guḻun’ŋa.

Ga dhanalim ŋawatthuwanan bala ŋayathanan banhaya dhanaliŋguway dhanal. Dhäkay-wiŋ’wiŋdhuwan ga ŋayaŋuyu ŋayathan. Ga bitjanan bili gayŋan gäḻkuḻan nhanguwaynha goŋ gäḻkuḻanam. Nhanan miyarrka-nhäŋal nhäwu malaŋuwu banha nhän gayŋiyan ŋunhuwaḻi yänan nyenanhaḻi weykan. Ŋunhuwaḻi bili bäpumiŋuru malaŋuru ga yumunku’wuru ga ḏirramuwuḻ gutjparr’. Bilanya.


Nyeliŋgu dhäwu dhaŋu. Ga djarr’yuwa warra dhuwalilŋura dhäwu. Nhäyinyara? Ŋala bilaŋ dharaŋganda. Nhä nhunum ŋarru nhäma dhaŋuya, mala-yarr’yun? Bilanya.

English Translation

A long time ago in this place, there was a big round pond that was full of fish. In the pond there lived a father and a mother fish, with their children, both young and old. They lived there all their lives and were very happy looking after their place. They had their own duties.

They didn’t expect others to do their hunting. The family had a happy life living there, because they looked after the place very well. Good! The mother and the father taught the children everything.

The father and the mother fish were very smart and clever. The father taught the boys how to go hunting, while the mother fish taught the girls how to collect different kinds of food. They were very happy living there.
They were living in the waterhole, cooking food and hunting. They all lived happily there because only fish lived in the waterhole.

After a few days they saw a shadow of a whirlwind on the water. The shadow had food in his hand, then it threw the food on the water. And the fish saw the food falling on the water. Then they swam away in all directions, because they didn’t know what it was.

The eldest son, swam in and got the food, and tasted it. Then he shared it around. They collected all the food and ate it, until there was no more.

Then the fish got some more food from the whirlwind and took it and ate it. From then on they were living on the shadow’s food. The old way of life was fading away slowly. They didn’t go hunting any more since the shadow kept bringing food and throwing it into the waterhole. The fish would rush at the food.

Sometimes there was a fight between the fish to get to the food first, and sometimes there was pushing and shoving. From then on they were forgetting their old way of life, what they had before.
Before, they were not lazy and didn’t wait for others to do their work. They used too be happy and work together.
They were forgetting how they used to work and live before the shadow came.

Life used to be like that before. Life was good before.
And so on ….. .
Until the shadow came along with its handouts, then gave them a taste for its food. They ate it, tasted it and like it like that, and they waited for the food.
They would rely on the shadow for their food.

From then on, their law was lost, gone and they had nothing. Little bit by little bit they lost everything.
Then they asked themselves, what were they doing before the shadow came. “Go away! Take away your law! It belongs to you, it’s bad for us, it’s making us lazy.”, they should have spoken like that. The fish should have said these things to the shadow.So they got it, held it and tasted it. Tasted it, chewed it, wanted it. Like that they waited, waiting on the shadow’s handouts. They sat around doing nothing depending on what the shadow gave them. From there, all the groups depended on the shadow, from the women and the children to the men. Like that.
