Buwaray Raykurayku

Gälpu Word Book

In 2022, the Literature Production Centre – Shepherdson College (LPC) were proud to finally publish and share a new publication for the Yolŋu community, Buwaray Raykurayku Gälpu Dhäruk.

Over twenty-seven years in the making, this resource was devised in the early 1990s by the author Marilyn Ganyinurru (2) Gurruwiwi during her time as a Literacy Worker in the LPC. As a Gälpu woman, Marilyn wanted to support the students in the College who came to school speaking Gälpu, were affiliated with the clan or with the Yolŋu language group it belongs to – the Dhaŋu group.

This book is her vision. It is truly unique. There are 1700 entries, each with a picture and a little story. All of it is in Gälpu. All of the work in creating the text, creating the graphics and the editing has been undertaken by Gälpu or close family members such as wives, mothers or children.

Over the years the support team has included the Teacher-Linguists and Literacy Production Supervisors at Shepherdson College, the East Arnhem Linguist, Bilingual Programs Managers, ARDS and Batchelor Press. Buwaray Raykurayku Gälpu Dhäruk is also available for purchase through the Shepherdson College Reception with all proceeds used to support the production of future Gälpu resources and programs.

Classroom teachers can request copies from the LPC.
